Jacque,
in the USA
Just finished reading Fox Evil. A very good read. Especially
enjoyed its locale. My great-grandmother came from Bridport and her people
lived all over that area for generations. Loved the two minor characters
named Fowler and Wyatt as those were two of the family names I had researched.
Hope one day to be able to visit the UK and Dorset in particular. Looking
forward to reading more of your novels.

Chris, in Italy
(and South Africa!)
First of all
congratulations on your books. I live between Italy and South African
and have read them all, I think. I enjoy them very much especially the
lack of obvious endings and trite morality. As the father of two intelligent
grown up daughters (whom I love with all my heart), I especially like
the subtlety of your female characterization: the refusal of an indisputable
"good".
So, to the reason for my communication. I note with pleasure that you
have not abandoned for ever one of your most endearing female personalities,
Anne Cattrell. She popped up again in Fox Evil. Good.
Like many people who live in a soap opera world, I would like to know
more about what happened to her after The Ice House.
But you are a novelist, not a soapie script writer. But what am I to do
with my curiosity and sense of solidarity towards Anne? Grin and bare
it? I have done up to now.
But now you have given me another: one I care for even more. Nancy Smith,
Captain, Royal Engineers. I am a pacifist not a militarist, even though
I am the son and grandson of army officers (Irish) who died in two world
wars fighting for the Brits. I felt great empathy for Nancy and want to
know lots more about her. I am against the Anglo/American presence in
Iraq with all my heart and feel greatly for the young Italian women (the
same age and political commitment as my own daughters) who were happily
freed. But I do not contest Nancy s decision to join the army. I just
want to know where it went from there. Between company dyke to platoon
bicycle how did she survive? Or did she?
Please accept this in the sense it was intended. Go on writing as you
will. There is no reason to follow your own characters. I will read whatever
you produce if it is as good as it has been up to now. But Nancy needs
another spin, at least.
With very best wishes from one of your most attentive readers!

Rick,
in Australia
I really wanted to pass on my thanks to you for the pleasure I have had
from your books. I read a great deal of technical literature but have
not been a fan of fiction.
However, I was on a plane in November next to a young girl who was reading
Fox Evil. I glanced at the writing and saw the extract
from a Bournemouth Evening Echo within the text. I did not speak
to the girl but bought the book at a bookstore within a few days .
I have now read all books with the exception of The Echo,
which I am now reading and the The Shape of Snakes, which
is next in line.

Melinda,
in Sweden:
I've just read Your book Fox
Evil in English. I can say that I couldn't leave the book lying,
because it was such exciting reading.
When I started reading your books, the first ones in Swedish, they became
poison to me. (We think she means this in a good way! - Ed.)
Your way of writing suits me. After reading your books I think a lot.
And I believe it makes me look at things differently, in a sort of good
way. And sometimes I think the ones conducting crimes are the real victims!
(I) have two lovely boys aged 11 and 13, and l hope we can give them love
enough for them to be good citizens and not victims. I believe warmth
and being able to really listen to our children makes them safe and stong
adaults.
I read in English because you can miss some good writing in the translation.
I'm not so good in English but I hope to be better by reading English
books...when I get my hands on a 'Minette Walters' it makes my day!
